Mothers’ Day – Honour Your Parents
It is Mother’s Day and Mother’s Day is a big deal to almost every mother. This is why one day a year is designated as Mother’s Day. For days in advance, families are reminded to find a way to say thanks to Mom just this once. Your mum hears the ads. She sees other mothers getting privileged treatment too so if you don’t do anything, she feels even more unappreciated. She thinks, “Why bother? They don’t even notice. I’m just an unpaid maid.”.
Exodus 20:12 – Honor your father and mother that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.
The Verse of Scripture above is not a law from the culture or the society.
This is a commandment from God Himself and as you would probably already know, this is one of the Ten Commandments. The Ten commandments was given by God to Israel through his prophet, Moses. Israel has been in bondage for over 400 years. They were about to, (or so they thought) enter the Promised Land and establish a stable country when God handed down the law.
Rather sadly, we sometimes assume that this commandment is only for kids, but the truth is that this commandment was for the entire community. This Fifth Commandment simply means to value, to respect, to pay tribute to and the responsibility to honor our mothers begins when we are a child and continues until the day we die.
Jesus Christ (our perfect example) set the example for us about how to honor our mother at the various stages of life. Today, I will like us to become determined to follow in His steps as we take a look at Luke 2:52.
At just 12 years old, Jesus had gone with His parents to worship at the temple in Jerusalem for the Passover Feast. They went in a large groups and the trip usually too 4 – 5 days. The boy Jesus had always proven responsible and His parents trusted Him so when the contingent from Nazareth started home Mary assumed Jesus was with His father and Joseph assumed He was with His mother.
At the end of the first day, when they set up camp, they discovered Jesus was not there. The longer they searched, the more concerned they were. Panic began to build in Mary’s heart – the heart of a true mother: she probably felt she had failed to protect Him. Mary and Joseph retraced their steps back to Jerusalem. It didn’t take ten minutes to find Him. It took three days and when they did find him at the temple, inspite of his giftings and special calling, Jesus displayed obedience & maturity when confronted by his mother (Please go read Luke 2)
It is important to note that it is impossible to be right with God and be wrong with your parents. Like Jesus exemplified, if you are a teenager, God does not expect you to question authority and assert your independence. Also, irrespective of whether you are a youth or a adult, when you obey and give honor to your mother, you are also honoring and being obedient to God.
Today, I want to encourage you, if you haven’t called your mom yet, I want to encourage you to do so NOW.
God BLESS all our Wives and Mothers
